Unlocking North Vancouver History

Wilderness on the Doorstep: Vancouver’s Mountain Playground

Conclusion

People have ranged through the mountains on Vancouver’s North Shore in pursuit of untouched wilderness since before the turn of the last century. Today there is growing recognition that the more people visit these natural areas, the less natural they will inevitably become. Given the Vancouver region’s steadily growing population–with a significant proportion seeking an outdoor lifestyle–the North Shore mountains face increasing pressure from human use. Further studies will be needed in the areas of commercial activity, education and awareness, stewardship, recreational trends (including mountain biking), and economic opportunities and tourism. As the already extensive network of the area’s hiking trails expands, it will take organizations such as Trails BC and the Trans Canada Trail to maintain and monitor them so that future generations can continue to enjoy their wilderness on the doorstep.
