To Waddington with Pigeons

A 1936 party of climbers are making up their loads from a cache on the Franklin Glacier near unclimbed Mount Waddington. A chartered boat and an advance party had hauled 550 kg. of supplies - including pigeons for carrying messages - to the foot of the mountain. The climbing team though fresh for the task, failed to reach Waddington's summit. Later, through binoculars, they watched with dismay as a pair of climbers from the American Alpine Club achieved the first ascent.
