Climbing Up Ice

Martin Kafer, left, belayed a line around his back to secure the climber ascending the ice wall. The red nylon rope passed around Martin, through a carabiner, seen above the climber’s lower foot, attached to an ice screw which was anchored to the wall and then around the climber’s waist. The other two carabiners attached to the ice screw each supported an etrier, a fabric ladder. A pair of skis and a day bag sit on the snow in the background. Martin wore typical 1960s gear – woollen knickers and high socks for winter climbing.
