Essentials for Safety

Mountaineering often involves the risk of falling on steep snow, ice, rock or on crevassed glaciers. Employing a rope in challenging situations, and knowing proper techniques, are essential for safe travel. Older ropes, made from natural fibres like hemp, were prone to getting heavy, wet or frozen. Nylon ropes, with a woven protective sheath around a core of individual fibres, are lighter, stronger, and stretch, so they can absorb some of the shock of a fall.
