Bug light, Private Collection. Photo NVMA.

Take a big tin can, punch a few holes in the sides to attach a wire handle, insert a candle, and you have made a “bug light.” These lights were popular in the early days with climbers and hikers who made their way up and down mountain slopes in the hours before dawn or after sunset. The holes punched in the back of the can form initials which identify the light’s owner.
