Carbide Light for Climbing

Mountain climbers often depart in the wee hours of the morning and return to camp long after the sun has set. Carbide lights were used by miners in the 1800s – climbers soon adapted them to illuminate their trails. Though these lamps left hands free to carry gear, a carbide could be extinguished by a light dusting of snow, plunging the surprised climber into darkness.
