Purdey on the Rocks

In 1968 Alice Purdey wore a modern helmet and carried the traditional ice axe strapped to her day pack. A rock hammer, for cleaning cracks and driving pitons, sits in a pouch on her right pant leg. Some nylon slings, a pair of etriers (small fabric ladders) and a carabiner dangle from her neck. Coated nylon gaiters cover her lower legs and boots, protecting them from snow. The rope she holds in her right hand is tied to her waist – today it would be attached to a harness.
